| When
Columbia introduced the 33 1/3 rpm record in October of 1948 they
issued 33 1/3 singles they called "7-Inch LP" using a completely new
numbering system. This numbering system began in 1948 and most likely
ended sometime in 1949 with the acceptance of RCA's 45 rpm singles.
After the end of this numbering system Columbia switched to a numbering
system that instead prefixed the 78 rpm number with a "4" to indicate
it was a 45 rpm single and 33 1/3 rpm single disappeared for a while
only to reappear years later as Jukebox singles. Towards the end of this discography are three 45 rpm box sets issued with this numbering system. They were also, presumably later, issued using the prefix "4" 78 rpm numbers after this numbering system was abandoned.
The prefixes for the most part are consistant except for Gene Autry who maybe Popular, Country or Childrens. 1-742 and 4-750 appear to be the same single for him. While the bulk of this discography is 33 1/3 rpm singles some of the missing numbers were used for 45 rpm singles only. Likewise some of the earlier 33 1/3 rpm singles were also issued on 45 rpm, it is assumed the 45 rpm singles are later re-issues when Columbia embraced the 45 rpm format and reissued what had been best sellers in the 33 1/3 or 78 rpm format. In cases of the single being issued in both 33 1/3 and 45 rpm the record number is color coded yellow and the 45 rpm number is in parentheses below the 33 1/3 rpm number. Color
